SARAH RAPHAEL
East Bergholt, Suffolk 1960
~ 2001 London
Much has been said about Sarah's work in the previous catalogue entry. However, her view of a Tuscan villa or farmhouse again underlines her skill in quick, almost impressionistic drawing. Like Narcissus, this sheet has a surreal quality about it. The large garden is deserted. The space is ambiguous. The viewer seems to be standing on a stone terrace looking across a stream or is it a country road?
Sarah would have spent considerable time in Tuscany. The classical simplicity of composition and the sense of architectonic space, in our sheet, are such a direct reflection of the ideals of the Italian Quattrocento. This sheet gives us Sarah's usual, deft pencil strokes and the sense of movement they impart. The three cypruses by the house are a vibrant example of her technique.
